Ms. Avis Brody was the original owner
of the Howard Johnson Restaurant and
Gandy Dancer Saloon back in the 50’s.
She later turned ownership over to her daughter and son-in-law, Skip
and Carol MacLean. 1973 saw the
addition of the Lobster Pound where Skip designed an ingenious steamer to
cook the lobsters and installed a barbeque pit.
The MacLean’s sold to Lou Gaynor and Harvey Chernin in 1984.
In October of that same year, a fire destroyed the restaurant and saloon
leaving only the Lobster Pound which, at that time, was a screened-in, stone
floor structure. Lou & Harvey
attached a new, permanent building in time for the ‘85 season*.
They continued to make more additions throughout the years.
However, despite all the alterations, Skip’s lobster steamer is still
in operation.
*1985
also saw the conception of Motorcycle Week vendor space on the property.
As an annual event since 1923, what began here with four vendors is now a
major economic boost in Weirs Beach that lasts for nine days in June .
The Lobster Pound property now hosts 75 major vendors and exhibitors
from all over the country.
